Bark Mulch — The Complete Guide
Bark mulch is one of the most cost-effective things you can do for a garden. It suppresses weeds, retains moisture, insulates roots, and improves soil structure as it decomposes.
What is Bark Mulch?
Bark mulch is chipped and shredded tree bark, usually from pine, spruce, or mixed softwood. It's a natural organic material that breaks down slowly over time, enriching the soil with organic matter. Play bark is a finer grade used for children's play areas as an impact-absorbing surface. Ornamental bark is coarser and designed for longer-lasting garden coverage.
Common uses
- Weed suppression in borders and beds
- Moisture retention around plants
- Children's play area safety surfacing
- Tree pit mulching
- Woodland garden and shaded area surfacing
- Pathway surfacing in gardens
Sizes & grades
Play bark: fine, 10–30mm particles for play areas (check RoSPA guidelines for required depth). Ornamental bark: medium to coarse, 20–60mm for garden borders. Premium bark: less debris and consistent sizing.
How much do you need?
For garden borders at 75mm depth: length × width × 0.075 × 0.15 tonnes/m³ (bark is very light). A 20m² border needs approximately 0.2 tonnes or about 2m³. For play areas, a minimum 300mm depth is required to meet safety standards.
Pro tip
Top up bark mulch annually in spring. As it decomposes it adds organic matter to the soil but reduces in depth. Keep bark mulch 100mm away from the base of tree trunks to prevent rot.
