Topsoil — The Complete Guide

Topsoil is the foundation of any garden or landscaping project. But not all topsoil is equal — understanding grades and types will help you get the right material for your project.

What is Topsoil?

Topsoil is the upper layer of natural soil, typically the top 100–200mm of ground. It's rich in organic matter and nutrients that plants need to thrive. Commercial topsoil sold by aggregate suppliers is usually sourced from land clearance, construction sites, and agricultural land. Quality varies enormously — from premium screened topsoil for lawns to unscreened bulk fill for levelling.

Common uses

  • Lawn creation and turf laying
  • Raised beds and vegetable gardens
  • Landscaping and land restoration
  • Filling and levelling ground
  • Tree and shrub planting
  • Sports pitches and playing fields

Sizes & grades

Grade A (Premium): finely screened, weed-seed free, ideal for lawns and seed beds. Grade B: screened, suitable for borders and general planting. Unscreened bulk fill: suitable for raising levels where growing quality isn't critical.

How much do you need?

For a new lawn at 150mm depth: length × width × 0.15 × 1.0 tonne/m³. A 10m × 5m garden needs approximately 7.5 tonnes. For raised beds, calculate the volume and multiply by 0.8 tonnes/m³ (topsoil is lighter than aggregates).

Pro tip

Always ask your supplier for a soil analysis or BS 3882 certification for premium topsoil. Poor quality topsoil can introduce weeds and disease that take years to control.
