MOT Type 2 Sub-base — The Complete Guide

MOT Type 2 is a granular sub-base material often used in lower-trafficked areas and as a general fill material. It's cheaper than Type 1 but less suitable for heavy vehicle traffic.

What is MOT Type 2 Sub-base?

MOT Type 2 is a crushed stone or recycled aggregate material graded from 0mm to 75mm. Unlike Type 1, it can contain some natural fines and doesn't need to meet the same strict grading requirements. This makes it more variable in composition but also more cost-effective for many applications. Type 2 is widely used in civil engineering as a general sub-base where Type 1 specification isn't required.

Common uses

  • Sub-base beneath paths and lightly trafficked areas
  • General fill and bulk excavation backfill
  • Drainage blanket layers
  • Garden paths and informal hardstanding
  • Levelling and raising ground levels
  • Temporary haul roads on construction sites

Sizes & grades

Typically graded 0–75mm. The larger maximum size means it's coarser than Type 1 and contains more variable particle sizes.

How much do you need?

Calculate using the same formula as Type 1: length (m) × width (m) × depth (m) × 2.1 tonnes/m³. For lightly trafficked paths, a 100mm compacted depth is usually sufficient.

Pro tip

If in doubt between Type 1 and Type 2, choose Type 1. The small cost difference is worth it for the improved performance and longevity, especially under driveways.
