Quarry Dust — The Complete Guide

Quarry dust is a byproduct of crushing stone that's found a wide range of uses on construction sites and in landscaping. Cheap, readily available, and surprisingly versatile.

What is Quarry Dust?

Quarry dust (also called crusher dust or stone dust) is the fine powder and small particles produced as a byproduct when rock is crushed at a quarry. It's typically limestone or granite dust with particles ranging from 0mm to 6mm, dominated by very fine particles. When compacted and wetted, it binds and sets almost like a weak concrete, making it ideal for surfaces and joints.

Common uses

  • Jointing between block paving and flagstones
  • Compacted path and track surfaces
  • Filling and levelling before paving
  • Tennis court and sports surface construction
  • Stable and farm track surfaces
  • Horse arena and menage surfaces

Sizes & grades

0–6mm fine dust. Usually supplied as crusher run (all-in) with dust and small aggregate mixed together.

How much do you need?

For path surfaces at 75mm depth: length × width × 0.075 × 1.5 tonnes/m³. It compacts significantly, so allow for 20–25% compaction when ordering.

Pro tip

Wet quarry dust before compacting for best results. Once compacted and set it creates a firm, weed-resistant surface. Re-apply and top up annually on high-traffic areas.
