Rockery Stone — The Complete Guide
Rockery stone creates dramatic, naturalistic garden features that low-maintenance planting can thrive in. Choosing the right stone type makes all the difference to the finished effect.
What is Rockery Stone?
Rockery stone refers to larger, irregular lumps of natural stone used to create rock gardens, retaining features, and naturalistic garden elements. Common types include Yorkshire sandstone, Welsh slate, Cotswold limestone, granite, and millstone grit. Each has a different character, colour, and texture. Rockery stone is sold by weight (tonnes) but chosen by eye — suppliers will usually let you select pieces or supply mixed random sizes.
Common uses
- Rock garden and alpine garden construction
- Garden border edging and definition
- Natural retaining walls and terracing
- Water feature surrounds
- Steep slope stabilisation
- Statement garden features
Sizes & grades
Small (5–20kg pieces) for smaller rockeries and edging. Medium (20–100kg) for main rockery features. Large (100kg+) for statement boulders and retaining walls. Most suppliers sell mixed loads.
How much do you need?
Rockery stone is difficult to estimate precisely. As a guide, allow 1–1.5 tonnes per m² of rockery face. Always order slightly more than you think you need — odd-shaped stones are hard to match later.
Pro tip
Bury at least one-third of each stone in the ground for a natural appearance. Stones sitting proud of the soil look artificial and tend to wobble. Tilt them slightly backward to direct rainwater towards plant roots.
